The Extra Parts a Lift Kit Needs (That Aren't in the Box)

Open a lift kit box and you get springs or spacers, shocks, brackets and hardware. What you do not always get is everything the truck needs to run that new ride height safely. On a leveling kit or a mild lift, the box is usually the whole job. On a taller lift, it frequently is not, and the parts that get added are the ones nobody warned the owner about.

This is not upselling. When you move a suspension two, four or six inches away from where the factory put it, some parts simply run out of room. Below is what actually gets added, why, and how to tell in advance whether your build will need it.

Why a taller lift needs parts the kit doesn't include

A truck's suspension is a set of arcs. The control arms swing on an arc, the axle travels on an arc, and everything attached to those parts — brake hoses, ABS wires, sway bar links, the driveshaft — was cut to the length that arc needs from the factory. Lift the body away from the axle and those lengths are now short at full droop. Lower the axle relative to the frame and the angles that the driveshaft and CV joints run at get steeper.

Kit manufacturers build to a price point and to the widest possible fitment. Many kits include the parts that most buyers will need and leave the rest as separate part numbers, because not every truck and not every tire package needs them. That is a reasonable way to build a kit. It is a bad surprise on install day if nobody mentioned it first.

Extended brake lines

This is the one that matters most and gets skipped most. The factory brake hose has a fixed length. At normal ride height with the truck on its wheels, a lift may look fine. The problem shows up at full droop — a wheel hanging over a dip, a lift arm under the frame, a rut on a job site. If the hose runs out of slack before the suspension runs out of travel, the hose takes the load. That can pull a fitting, tear a hose or stretch it until it fails later.

The check is simple and it belongs in every install: get the suspension to full extension and look at the hose with the wheel turned lock to lock in both directions. If the hose is tight, or if it now rubs a control arm or a sway bar where it did not before, it needs longer lines or a relocated bracket. Rear lines on a solid axle with lift blocks or taller springs need the same look.

Sway bar end links and bump stops

Sway bar end links have the same geometry problem as brake hoses in reverse — the sway bar stays with the frame while the suspension drops away, so the link is being asked to span a longer gap. Run a short link at a steep angle and you get bind, clunk, and eventually a bent link or a torn boot. Extended links restore the angle so the bar does what it is supposed to do, which is control body roll. On a lifted truck that is not a comfort item, it is a handling item.

Bump stops go the other direction. A bump stop is what keeps a tire out of the fender and a shock off its internal stop at full compression. Lift the truck and add a larger tire, and the space the tire needs at full stuff changes. Sometimes you need taller bump stops to keep a big tire out of the sheet metal; sometimes a kit relocates them. Getting this wrong is a very common cause of rubbing after a lift that no amount of alignment will fix.

Driveshaft, carrier bearing and CV angles

Lifting a truck changes the angle the driveshaft runs at. On a two-piece shaft, that often means a carrier bearing drop bracket to bring the center support back down and get the two halves of the shaft closer to parallel again. We wrote about carrier bearing drops and lift height separately because it is the single most common source of a new vibration after a lift.

On an independent front suspension, the same logic applies to the CV axles. There is an angle beyond which a CV joint is working hard all the time, and it will tell you about it in boot life and joint life. This is one of the real limits on how much lift a given front end wants, and it is a bigger factor in choosing a height than most buyers expect. Upper control arms, track bars and steering

On an independent front suspension, lifting the front raises the lower ball joint and changes the arc the upper arm swings through. Past a certain height the factory upper arm limits how much caster the alignment tech can put back in, and the ball joint itself may be running near the edge of its range of motion. Aftermarket upper control arms exist to give that range back — see when you actually need upper control arms for where that line usually falls.

Solid front axle trucks have their own version. Lifting a solid axle shifts the axle sideways relative to the frame because the track bar swings on an arc too, and it changes the drag link angle at the steering box. An adjustable track bar recenters the axle, and a corrected drag link or a pitman arm keeps the steering geometry sane. Skipping these is a frequent entry on our list of install mistakes we see come through the shop.

How to find out before install day

The honest answer is that the parts list depends on three things: how much lift, what tire and wheel package, and what the truck already has. A modest leveling kit on stock tires usually needs nothing but an alignment. A taller suspension lift with a bigger tire is where the list above starts showing up.

So ask before the truck is on the rack. A good shop should be able to look at your specific truck and your target height and tell you which of these apply, and give you the whole picture up front instead of a phone call halfway through the job.
