Towing a Boat With a Lifted Truck: The Lake Conroe Setup Guide

Every summer we hear the same worry from customers around Lake Conroe: "I want to lift my truck, but I tow my boat every weekend." Good news — a properly specced lift and weekend towing get along just fine. The key word is "properly." Here's what actually matters, from a shop ten minutes up the road from the lake.

The 4 Things That Make or Break a Towing Build

1. The right hitch drop

Lift the truck 4–6" and your receiver goes up with it — hook up with your old ball mount and the trailer rides nose-high, which unloads the tongue and makes the whole rig wander. The fix costs less than a tank of gas: a properly sized drop hitch. We'll tell you the exact drop for your setup before you leave.

2. Keep some rake

Factory trucks sit nose-down on purpose — it's headroom for tongue weight. A build that's dead-level empty goes tail-down the moment the boat's hooked up. On towing trucks we spec the lift to keep a touch of rake, so it sits right both empty and loaded. This is exactly why "what do you use the truck for?" is the first question in every estimate.

3. Load-rated tires — not just big tires

A 35" tire with a soft sidewall squirms under trailer sway. For regular towing we spec Load Range E (or appropriately rated) all-terrains — Toyo Open Country A/T III and Nitto Recon Grappler are our go-tos. More on that choice in our A/T vs M/T guide.

4. Airbag helper springs (the boat-owner cheat code)

If you tow heavy or often, airbags on the rear are the single best towing upgrade for a lifted truck — they firm up under load and keep the rear from sagging at the ramp, then air down for a normal ride Monday morning. We install them regularly, usually same-day.

What About Power When Towing?

Straight talk: 35s and up cost you some pulling power, and your truck feels it most hauling a load out of a wet ramp. Most half-tons handle a bass boat or pontoon on 35s without drama. If you're pulling a heavy wake boat or a big cruiser, tell us — tire size and lift height decisions should account for it, and sometimes the honest answer is "run 34s and keep your grunt."

The Ramp Test

Every towing build we do gets specced against the real test: backing down a slick Lake Conroe ramp, pulling out loaded, and driving home at 70 on I-45 without white knuckles. Look right at the sandbar, tow right at the ramp — you can have both.
