Walk into our shop in Willis and this is the fork in the road almost every build starts at: level it or lift it? We install both every single day, so here's the honest breakdown — including when we'll talk you out of the more expensive option.
The 30-Second Version
- Leveling kit — raises the front 1.5"–2.5" to match the rear, kills the factory nose-down rake, clears moderately bigger tires. Cheap, keeps the factory ride, done in a day.
- Lift kit — raises the whole truck 3"–6"+ with new suspension components. Real tire clearance (35s–37s+), real presence, bigger price tag.
What a Leveling Kit Gets You
Factory trucks sit nose-down on purpose (it accounts for payload). A leveling kit fixes the stance and buys you tire room: most half-tons clear 33s easily and 34s with the right wheel offset after a level. On HD trucks like a Super Duty, a 2" level clears 35s.
Choose the level if: you daily-drive it, tow with it, park it in a garage, and want it to look right without changing how it drives. It's the best money-per-inch upgrade in trucks.
What a Lift Kit Gets You
A real suspension lift replaces springs, adds drop brackets or control arms, and physically raises the truck. That's what it takes to run a clean 35" tire with zero rubbing on a half-ton, or 37s–40s on an HD. It also transforms the truck's presence — there's no substitute.
Choose the lift if: you want 35s or bigger, you off-road enough to use the clearance, or the look is the point. Just budget honestly — see our full cost guide.
Side by Side
| Leveling Kit | Lift Kit | |
|---|---|---|
| Height gained | 1.5"–2.5" (front) | 3"–6"+ (whole truck) |
| Max tire size (half-ton) | 33"–34" | 35"–37"+ |
| Installed cost | $400–$1,500 | $2,000–$7,000+ |
| Ride quality | Stays near-factory | Depends on kit quality |
| Towing impact | Minimal | Needs proper spec |
| Install time | Same day | 1–2+ days |
The Mistakes We Fix Most Often
- Max tire on a level. Squeezing 35s onto a leveled half-ton with trimming and an aggressive offset usually rubs eventually. If you want 35s, want the lift.
- Cheapest 6" kit on the internet. Bracket lifts with worn-out geometry ride like a hay wagon. Kit quality matters more as height goes up.
- Forgetting the alignment. Any suspension change needs one. Ours are done in-house, included, on every install.
It Depends on Your Truck — Literally
The right answer is different on a coil-over F-150 vs a solid-axle Super Duty vs a Tacoma. See what we typically run on your platform: Ford, Chevy & GMC, RAM, Toyota, Jeep, or Nissan.
