Toyota Tacoma Leveling Kit Guide: Cost, Kits, and Tire Fitment

The Tacoma is the most common midsize truck in our bays, and the request is almost always the same: kill the factory nose-down rake, fit a slightly bigger tire, and keep the ride Toyota built. A leveling kit does all three. Here is the full picture for Tacoma owners around Willis, Conroe, and The Woodlands - cost, kit options by generation, and what actually fits afterward.

What a Tacoma leveling kit costs installed

Leveling kit installs start at $550 at our shop - parts, labor, and the $150 four-wheel alignment included in the quote. Most Tacoma levels are same-day jobs. For how that price compares across trucks and kit styles, see what a leveling kit costs in Texas.

Which kits fit your Tacoma

Tacomas have run coil-over front suspension since 2005, so front leveling is straightforward across three generations:

Generation Years Typical front level Common kit styles
2nd gen 2005-2015 2 to 3 inches coilover spacer, ReadyLIFT SST
3rd gen 2016-2023 2 to 3 inches coilover spacer, Rough Country, Bilstein height-adjustable
4th gen 2024+ 1.5 to 2.5 inches ReadyLIFT and Rough Country applications

Two honest notes from the shop floor. First, on higher-mileage Tacomas the factory coilovers are often the tired part - if yours has six digits on the odometer, a height-adjustable strut (Bilstein or Fox) levels the truck and renews the damping in one job, and we will tell you when that is the smarter spend. Second, stay inside the kit maker's height rating: the Tacoma's CV axles and ball joints have a fixed travel budget, and moderate levels stay well within it.

Tire size after a level

Most Tacomas leave the factory on 265/70R17 or 265/65R17 - roughly a 31 to 31.6-inch tire. With a 2 to 2.5-inch level, a 285/70R17 (about 32.8 inches) fits most trims, though wheel offset decides how clean the fit is, and some combinations want minor liner trimming at full lock. We test fit and cycle the steering before the truck leaves. For the general sizing logic, our best tire size after a leveling kit post covers it, and the same rules apply here.

A note on TRD trims

Trim matters when we pick the kit. TRD Off-Road and TRD Pro Tacomas already sit differently than an SR5 - the Pro in particular runs upgraded suspension from the factory, and a simple spacer stacked on top of it is usually the wrong answer. On those trucks we quote around the suspension that is actually under it. SR, SR5, and Limited trims are the classic spacer-kit candidates: healthy factory coilovers, standard rake, straightforward install.

What install day looks like

Drop the truck in the morning and it is typically ready the same day. The front coilovers come out, the kit goes on per the manufacturer's spec, everything is torqued to spec with the suspension loaded, and then the truck goes on the alignment rack - camber, caster, and toe all move when the nose comes up, and the alignment is what protects your new tires. Before handoff we cycle the steering lock to lock and road test it. You leave with a level truck that drives the way it did when you dropped it off, just sitting right.

Does a level change how the Tacoma tows?

For the light towing most Tacomas do - a boat to Lake Conroe, a utility trailer, a pair of quads - a front level changes very little, because the rear suspension that carries the tongue weight is untouched. Keep the trailer loaded properly and the leveled Tacoma tows like a stock one.

Spacer or upgraded strut - which way to go

A spacer-style kit reuses your factory coilover, keeps the factory ride, and is the value play on a lower-mileage truck. An upgraded height-adjustable strut costs more but pays off on Tacomas that tow, carry a bed full of gear, or see washboard roads regularly. Either way the geometry changes, which is why the alignment is not optional - we explain what actually moves in alignment after a lift or leveling kit.

Drive a Tundra instead?

Everything above scales up for the full-size Toyota - we wrote a separate Tundra leveling kit guide. And if you are weighing a level against a full lift for either truck, our Toyota lift kits page covers the whole lineup.
