Types of Leveling Kits: Spacers, Struts, Torsion Keys & More

Truck suspension leveling kit installation at Lift Pro Customs

"Leveling kit" covers four very different pieces of hardware — and which one your truck needs depends entirely on what's under it. Here's the field guide we walk customers through at the counter in Willis.

1. Strut Spacers (Coil-Over Trucks)

A machined puck that sits on top of the factory strut — F-150, Silverado/Sierra 1500, RAM 1500, Tundra, and most half-tons. Cheapest option, keeps the factory ride, installs in a few hours. Quality matters: we install billet or laser-cut steel, not the bargain-bin stuff.

2. Full Replacement Leveling Struts

Instead of spacing the factory strut, you replace it — think Bilstein 5100s or coilover setups. Costs more, but you get a new shock and adjustable height in one shot. The right call on higher-mileage trucks whose struts are tired anyway. We compared them head-to-head in Spacers vs Struts.

3. Torsion Keys (GM HD & Older Trucks)

Silverado/Sierra 2500HD and older torsion-bar front ends level with aftermarket keys that re-index the torsion bar. Simple and effective — but they must be set correctly or the ride suffers. This is a place where install quality shows.

4. Coil Spacers & Add-a-Leafs (Solid Axle)

Super Duty, RAM 2500/3500, and Jeeps run solid front axles — leveling here means coil spacers or replacement springs. Different animal entirely, and tire clearance gains are bigger per inch.

The "4-Inch Leveling Kit" Myth

You'll see kits marketed as 4" leveling kits — at that height, it's not leveling anymore, it's a lift kit wearing a nametag. Past about 2.5" of front rise, you're changing suspension geometry enough to need the supporting hardware a real lift kit includes. If you want 4"+, read our Leveling Kit vs Lift Kit guide — you'll be happier with the truck.

Which Type Is Right For Your Truck?

Tell us the year, make, model, and how you use it — we'll tell you which type fits and quote the whole job (kit, install, alignment) as one number. Most leveling installs are same-day.
