Quick answer: A leveling kit is worth it if you want to lose the factory nose-down rake and fit a slightly bigger tire - it is the cheapest visual change you can make to a truck, starting around $550 installed with the alignment. It is not worth it if you were expecting more ground clearance, better towing, or a smoother ride, because a level does not really do any of those things.
We get asked this every week at our Willis shop, usually by somebody who has been staring at their truck in the driveway for a month. Here is the honest answer from a shop that installs these things constantly - including the cases where we tell people not to bother.
What a Leveling Kit Actually Does
Trucks leave the factory sitting lower in front than in back. That is deliberate - it means the truck sits level when the bed is loaded or a trailer is hooked up. A leveling kit raises the front an inch or two so the truck sits flat when it is empty, which is how most people drive most of the time.
That is the whole job. It changes your stance, and it buys you a little room for a bigger tire. Everything else people expect from it is usually the tire doing the work, not the kit.
When It Is Worth It
You want the look. This is the honest number one reason and there is nothing wrong with it. A leveled truck on the right wheel and tire looks considerably better than a stock one, and it is the least expensive way to get there.
You want bigger tires without a full lift. A level plus the correct wheel offset usually gets you to a 33, and on a lot of trucks a 35 with some care. That is a real change in how the truck looks and how it handles a rough road. Details in best tire size after a leveling kit.
Your front end already sags. On an older truck, or one that has carried a plow or a heavy bumper, a replacement spring restores ride height that the factory spring has lost. That is maintenance dressed up as a modification, and it is money well spent.
You want it done once, correctly. A level with the alignment included and the right tire chosen up front costs less than doing it twice because the first shop guessed on offset.

When It Is Not Worth It
You are chasing ground clearance. A leveling kit raises the body, not the axle or the differential. Your lowest point is unchanged. Bigger tires add clearance - the kit does not.
You tow heavy and constantly. If your truck spends its life under a gooseneck, that factory rake is doing a job. You can still level it, but it needs the right spring rate so the truck squats correctly under load. See towing with a leveling kit.
You expect a better ride. A good kit should not hurt ride quality, but it will not improve it either. If ride is the actual complaint, you want shocks, not a level - the ride quality question covers it.
You are about to trade the truck in. Modifications rarely return their cost at trade-in. Do it because you want to enjoy the truck, not as an investment.

The part that surprises people is the tires. If you level a truck and keep the stock tires, you have spent money and barely changed the look - the gap over the front wheel just gets bigger. Level or Go Straight to a Lift?
