Are Lifted Trucks Legal in Texas? Height Laws, Inspections & What Actually Matters

Good news up front: Texas is one of the most lift-friendly states in the country. But "friendly" isn't "lawless," and we get asked about this constantly at our shop in Willis. Here's the practical rundown — what the rules actually are, and what matters more than the rules. (We're a truck shop, not a law firm — treat this as a starting point, not legal advice.)

The Short Version

  • No state lift-height limit for pickups. Texas doesn't cap suspension lift or body lift height on light trucks the way some states do.
  • 14 feet is the ceiling. Total vehicle height can't exceed 14 feet — a limit you will never hit with any sane build.
  • Headlights: 24 to 54 inches. Headlamp height (measured to the center of the lamp) must stay within this range — this is the rule tall builds actually bump into.
  • Annual safety inspections are gone. As of January 1, 2025, Texas dropped the annual safety inspection for personal vehicles. Montgomery County trucks still need the emissions test — but emissions doesn't care how tall your truck is.

The Rules That Actually Bite

Headlight height and aim

Lift a truck 6"+ and your headlights move with it. Past 54" to center of lamp, you're outside the allowed range — and even within it, unaimed lights blind oncoming drivers and get you flashed all night. We check lamp height and aim on tall builds as part of the install.

Anything that touches the road legally

Brakes, steering, and lighting all have to keep working like the factory intended. That's not a "lift law" — it's why quality kits matter. A proper lift keeps the geometry, brake lines, and driveshaft angles right. A cheap one is how trucks end up unsafe and uninsurable.

Your insurance company has opinions

This is the one nobody talks about. Texas may not care about your 6" lift, but your insurer wants to know about modifications — an undisclosed lift can complicate a claim. A quick call to add the modifications to your policy is cheap protection for a $10k build.

What About Tires Sticking Past the Fenders?

Texas doesn't have the strict fender-coverage laws some states do, but ultra-aggressive setups that throw rocks at windshields are a good way to attract attention — and some situations (like mud flaps on certain vehicle types) do have requirements. If you want the wide look without the hassle, fender flares solve it — we install paint-matched flares regularly for exactly this reason.

Moving Here From Another State?

If you're coming from California, Virginia, or another strict state — welcome, your build is almost certainly fine here. The Houston-area emissions check (Montgomery County included) is the only recurring hoop, and it's about your exhaust, not your altitude.

Build It Right and the Law Is Easy

Every truck we lift leaves with correct headlight aim, proper brake line length, and an in-house alignment. Legal, safe, and dialed — that's the standard. Curious what a compliant build costs? See our lift cost guide or check your platform: Ford, Chevy & GMC, RAM, Toyota, Jeep, or Nissan.
