How Much Does It Cost to Put Bigger Tires on a Truck?

Right after "how much does it cost to lift a truck," the next question through our door in Willis is about tires. Bigger tires change the look of a truck more than almost anything else you can bolt on, and the pricing online is all over the place - marketplace tire prices with no mounting, no balancing, no hardware, and no honest talk about what else the truck needs. Here are the real numbers.

The quick numbers

Upgrade Starts at
Bigger tires on your current wheels $1,250 installed
New wheels $1,750
Wheel and tire package $3,000
Leveling kit for clearance $550
2.5 to 3.5 inch lift $1,100
Alignment (with any suspension change) $150 - included in install quotes

All of that is installed pricing - mounted, balanced, torqued, out the door. Every truck is different, which is why we do free estimates, but those floors are honest.

What actually drives the price

The size jump. A set of 33s costs meaningfully less than a set of 35s in the same tread pattern, and 37s are another step again. Bigger tires use more rubber and are built to carry more, and pricing follows.

Load range. LT-rated tires - especially E-rated - carry stiffer, heavier construction than the P-metric tires most half-tons ship with. They tow and wear better, and they cost more per corner.

Brand and tread type. We carry Nitto, Toyo, BFGoodrich, Mickey Thompson, Falken, Cooper, Fury, Atturo, and Goodyear. Within any brand, a mud-terrain runs more than the same size all-terrain, and hybrid treads sit in between. There is a right tire for a Willis commuter that sees an I-45 tow lane twice a month, and it is usually not the most expensive one on the wall. If you are still weighing size against load range and tread, our guide to picking lifted truck tires walks through all three.

Mounting, balancing, and TPMS. Our quotes include mounting and balancing in-house. If your sensors need to move over or be replaced, that gets called out in the estimate up front, not discovered on the invoice.

Do you need new wheels too?

Not always. Plenty of trucks take a 33 on the factory wheel with zero drama. The wheel conversation starts when you want a wider tire than the stock wheel should carry, or when the offset needed to clear suspension components at full lock is different from what you have. If you are going to 35s or wider, price the wheel and tire package against tires alone - the package route from $3,000 often lands within a few hundred dollars of piecing it together later, and you only pay for mounting once.

Will bigger tires even fit without a lift?

This is where most of the surprise cost lives, so know before you buy. We keep two write-ups on exactly this: what tire size fits a stock truck and what size tires fit without a lift. The short version for most late-model half-tons: 33s usually fit stock, 34s are truck-by-truck, and 35s generally want a leveling kit plus minor trimming up front. If you are on the fence about the 35 jump, read are 35-inch tires worth it first - for a lot of daily-driven trucks a sharp 33 or 34 is the smarter money.

When a level or lift is part of the plan, alignment is not optional - the $150 alignment is included in those install quotes, and it is the difference between tires that wear evenly for 50,000 miles and tires that are done on the inside edge at 20,000.

The costs nobody mentions online

Bigger, heavier tires ask more of the truck. Expect some fuel economy and seat-of-the-pants power change - we measured out the honest numbers in do bigger tires hurt MPG and power. Your speedometer will also read slightly slow until it is recalibrated, and a heavier tire is harder on wear items over the long haul. None of that is a reason to skip the upgrade - it is a reason to size the upgrade to how you actually use the truck.

And plan on rotations. Big all-terrains and mud-terrains reward a regular rotation schedule more than street tires do - it is the cheapest thing you can do to stretch a $1,500 set of tires toward its full tread life instead of cupping the fronts early.

What about 37s? That is a different project. A 37 is a genuinely large tire that wants a real lift - our 3.5 to 6 inch installs start at $2,200 - plus the right wheel width and offset, and honest trimming on most trucks. We build them, but nobody should back into a 37 by accident; that combination should be planned as a package from the start.
