Midsize Truck Leveling and Lift Guide: Ranger, Colorado, Frontier, Gladiator

Special Leveling Kit + Parts + Install + Alignment $550 installed on most half-ton trucks — your free estimate confirms the exact price. Claim This Special →

Quick answer: Midsize trucks - Ranger, Colorado, Frontier, Gladiator, Tacoma - lift cheaper and easier than half-tons, but they are far less forgiving about tire size. A leveling kit runs about $550 installed with the alignment. Most midsize trucks top out around a 33 without trimming, and the Gladiator is the odd one out because it is solid axle front and rear.

We get a steady stream of midsize trucks through the Willis shop, and the questions are consistent enough that they are worth answering in one place. Here is what actually differs from lifting a full-size truck.

Why Midsize Is Different

A half-ton has room. Bigger wheel wells, more suspension travel, gearing that tolerates a taller tire. A midsize truck has less of all three. The result is that the same two-inch leveling kit that disappears under an F-150 makes a noticeable difference on a Ranger - and the same 35-inch tire that bolts onto a Silverado will rub on almost every midsize truck built.

The other difference is gearing. Midsize trucks are geared for their factory tire. Add two inches of tire diameter and you will feel it, especially towing or climbing. That is not a reason to skip it, just a reason to be realistic about how big to go.

Ford Ranger

Independent front suspension, leaf springs in back. A front leveling kit of about two inches evens out the stance and clears a 33 on most configurations. Rangers respond well to a real strut assembly rather than a spacer if you want the ride to improve rather than just the height.

Watch the front end geometry past two inches - same story as any IFS truck, the alignment has to be brought back into spec afterward.

Chevy Colorado and GMC Canyon

These lift cleanly. A leveling kit up front, optionally a small rear block or add-a-leaf to keep the rake honest, and a 32 or 33-inch tire. The ZR2 versions are a different conversation - they came from the factory with real suspension already, and the right move on a ZR2 is usually to leave the suspension alone and put the money into tires.

Nissan Frontier

Which Frontier matters. The older generation used a torsion bar front end, which can be adjusted for height - cheap, but it uses up your down-travel and the ride suffers if you crank it too far. The 2022 and newer trucks moved to a more conventional setup and take a normal leveling or coilover kit.

If somebody quotes you a Frontier "lift" that is just a torsion key adjustment, know what you are buying. We cover that in torsion key installation.

Jeep Gladiator

The Gladiator is not really a midsize truck in suspension terms - it is a Wrangler with a bed. Solid axles front and rear, coil sprung, which means lifting it is a completely different job. You are dealing with control arms, track bars, driveshaft angles, and a steering geometry that is sensitive to height.

The upside is that a Gladiator handles a 35 far more gracefully than any other midsize truck, because the solid front axle does not have the geometry limits that IFS does. The downside is that a proper Gladiator lift costs more and involves more parts. See our Jeep lift kit page - the approach is nearly identical.

Toyota Tacoma

The Tacoma is the most common midsize truck we see, and it has its own guide - the Tacoma leveling kit guide covers spacer versus coilover, upper control arms, and tire fitment in detail.

Tire Size: Be Honest With Yourself

A 33 is the practical ceiling for most midsize trucks on a leveling kit alone. You can get there with a two-inch front lift and, on some trucks, no trimming at all.

A 35 on a midsize truck means one or more of: trimming the fenders, a body mount chop, a taller lift, or regearing. On a Gladiator it is straightforward. On a Ranger or a Colorado it is a project. We would rather tell you that before you buy tires than after.

What It Costs

A leveling kit installed on a midsize truck starts around $550 including the alignment. A full lift with better shocks generally runs $1,200 to $2,800 depending on brand and how much of the suspension you replace. Gladiators sit at the higher end because there is more hardware involved.

The alignment is $150 and it is included in every quote - not an add-on and not skipped.

Financing

Affirm and Sunbit for financing, Acima, Snap, and Kafene for lease-to-own. Acima starts a lease for as little as $10 with a 90-day early purchase option, and Snap goes up to $5,000 with all credit types welcome to apply. Details are on our financing page.
