If your Chevy or GMC uses a torsion bar front suspension, leveling it works differently than on a truck with coil springs or struts. There is no spacer to stack and no spring to swap. The front ride height is set by a bolt, and that fact leads to both the cheapest leveling job in the truck world and the most commonly botched one.
Here is what a torsion bar setup actually does, the difference between cranking the stock keys and installing new ones, and where the method runs out of road.
What a torsion bar front end actually is
Instead of a coil spring, a torsion bar suspension uses a long steel bar running front to back along the frame. One end is splined into the lower control arm; the other end is splined into a torsion key held by an adjusting bolt. When the wheel moves up, the bar twists. The bar's resistance to twisting is the spring.
The adjusting bolt does not change the spring. It changes the bar's resting preload — how much twist is already in the bar when the truck is sitting still. Turn the bolt in and the bar pushes the control arm down harder, so the truck sits higher. That is why torsion leveling is so cheap: the adjustment is already built into the truck. Not every GM truck uses this design, and it varies by model, cab configuration and year, so confirm what your truck actually has before you buy anything. Cranking the stock keys: what you gain and what you give up
Turning the factory adjusting bolts in will raise the front of the truck. Done in moderation and followed by an alignment, it is a legitimate way to take the rake out of a GM truck. That is the appeal, and it is real.
The give is ride quality and travel. Preloading the bar harder means the suspension starts further into its own travel. You have less down travel before the arm tops out and less up travel before the suspension hits the bump stop. The ride gets firmer and choppier over small stuff because the bar is already loaded. Crank far enough and the truck rides on the bump stops over anything sharp, which is where owners start describing it as harsh rather than firm. There is a hard limit too. The adjusting bolt has a finite amount of thread, and the control arm has a finite range before the ball joint is working at an angle it was not designed for. Running out of bolt is not a suggestion to keep going.

Aftermarket torsion keys: what they change
Aftermarket leveling keys are re-indexed. The splines that engage the torsion bar are clocked to a different position, so the bar sits at a different starting angle relative to the key. That lets the truck sit higher without you having to crank the adjusting bolt as far in to get there.
The important thing to understand is what re-indexed keys do not do: they do not add suspension travel and they do not change the spring rate of the bar. They give you a taller starting point with the adjuster closer to a normal position. That is a real advantage over maxing out the stock keys, but it does not make the truck ride like it did stock, and it does not remove the geometry limits below. Cheap keys that are indexed aggressively can put you right back into the harsh-ride problem at the height you actually wanted. Alignment, CV angles and front end wear
Every method of raising a torsion front end raises the lower control arm's outboard end relative to the frame. That does three things at once.
It changes camber and caster, which is why an alignment is not optional afterward. It steepens the CV axle angle, so the joints and boots work harder all the time. And it moves the ball joints toward the edge of their designed range of motion. Owners who level a torsion truck aggressively and skip the alignment tend to come back with feathered inner tire edges and a front end that is loose sooner than it should be.
The fix is not exotic. Level to a sensible height, align it properly with caster brought back where it belongs, and keep an eye on the boots. Trucks leveled a moderate amount and aligned correctly hold up fine.
When a torsion adjustment is the wrong tool
Torsion leveling is a front end adjustment. It does nothing for the rear of the truck and it does not give you clearance for a much larger tire on its own. If your goal is a noticeably taller truck or a substantially bigger tire package, the honest answer is that a torsion crank is not the path — you want an actual lift, which addresses front and rear together and comes with the geometry corrections built in. Getting it done right
A torsion leveling job is one of the least expensive changes you can make to the stance of a GM truck, and one of the easiest to overdo. The two things that separate a good result from a rough-riding truck with worn front end parts are picking a sensible height and aligning it properly afterward.
