New tires go on, the truck looks right, and the first thing most people do is set all four to whatever number was in the last tire they owned. That is usually the moment the tires start wearing badly. The pressure your truck needs is a function of the tire on it and the weight it carries — and when you change the tire, you change the answer.
This is one of the least glamorous parts of a wheel and tire package and one of the easiest to get wrong. Here is how to think about it.
Why the door placard number stops being the right number
The sticker in your driver's door jamb gives a cold inflation pressure for the tire size the truck was built with. It is not a property of the truck alone. It is the pressure the manufacturer calculated to carry that truck's weight on that specific tire size at that specific load rating.
Change the tire and every input to that calculation changes. A larger tire holds more air by volume, has a taller and often stiffer sidewall, and puts down a different contact patch. Run the placard number in a tire the placard was never written for and you are guessing.
Keep the placard — it is still the best record of what the truck weighs on each axle, and that number does not change. Just stop treating the pressure figure on it as universal.
What load range and load index actually tell you
Two markings on the sidewall matter here.
Load index is a number that corresponds to the maximum weight one tire can carry at its maximum rated pressure. Higher number, more capacity. It appears in the size string right before the speed rating.
Load range — the letter you will hear people talk about, C, D or E on trucks — describes how the tire is constructed and the maximum pressure it is designed to run. A higher load range tire has a stiffer carcass and is built for a higher inflation pressure at full load.
The trap is assuming a higher load range automatically means you should run more air. It does not. Load range tells you the tire's ceiling. What you actually run is set by the weight the tire is carrying, and on a half ton truck that is often well below the tire's maximum. Inflating a stiff load range E tire to its sidewall maximum on a light truck gives you a harsh ride and a strip of wear down the middle of the tread, because only the center of the contact patch is touching the road.
Going the other way is worse. An underinflated tire flexes at the shoulders, builds heat, wears both outer edges, and works the sidewall harder than it was designed to be worked.

The chalk test
The simplest way to see whether your pressure suits the tire is to look at the contact patch:
- Draw a thick line of sidewalk chalk straight across the tread, from one shoulder to the other, on a cold tire.
- Drive the truck straight ahead a short distance on flat, clean pavement and stop.
- Look at what wore off.
Chalk gone across the full width means the whole tread is carrying. Chalk gone only in the middle with the edges still marked means there is too much air. Chalk gone at both edges with a stripe left in the middle means there is not enough. Adjust in small steps and repeat.
Do it with the truck loaded the way you normally drive it. A truck that spends its week empty and its weekend towing does not have one perfect number, and that is fine — the point is to know which end of the range you are living at.
What wrong pressure looks like months later
You will see it in the tread long before you feel it in the steering:
- Center wear — a worn strip down the middle with good tread on both shoulders. Too much air.
- Both-edge wear — the outer ribs going bald while the middle looks new. Too little air.
- One-edge wear — that is not pressure, that is alignment, and bigger tires will not fix it. See our notes on alignment after a lift or leveling kit.
- Cupping or scalloping — usually worn shocks or a balance problem rather than pressure alone.
The distinction matters because tire wear is the most expensive symptom on a lifted truck and the one people most often blame on the wrong cause. If the wear is even across the tread but happening fast on one axle, look at alignment. If the wear pattern is symmetrical across the tread width, look at pressure.
Pressure, TPMS and the light on the dash
Your truck's tire pressure monitoring system was calibrated around the factory tire. Fit a taller tire and run it at a pressure that suits the new size, and the light can come on even though the tires are set exactly where you want them — the system is comparing against a threshold that was written for a different tire.
Depending on the truck, the threshold can sometimes be reset or relearned. Sometimes it cannot, and the sensor has to be handled differently. It is worth asking about before the wheels go on rather than discovering it on the drive home, alongside the other thing bigger tires quietly change: your speedometer reading.
Getting the whole package matched
Pressure is the last link in a chain that starts with the size and the load rating you picked. If the tire is right for the truck and the way you use it, the pressure question is easy. If it is not, no amount of air fixes it.
