Can You Level or Lift a Chevy Trail Boss or GMC AT4?

Drive around Montgomery County for an afternoon and you will lose count of the Silverado Trail Bosses and Sierra AT4s. GM sells a pile of them here, and they show up at our Willis shop with the same two questions: can you level it, and can you make it taller? Both answers are yes - with some Trail Boss and AT4 specifics worth understanding before you spend money.

What the factory 2-inch lift actually is

Trail Boss and AT4 trims ride on a factory 2-inch suspension lift with off-road tuned shocks and, depending on package, skid plates and a locking rear diff. Two things matter for our conversation. First, the factory lift raises both ends of the truck, so the truck keeps most of its factory rake - the nose still sits visibly lower than the bed. Second, the suspension is engineered as a system around that 2 inches, which is why the aftermarket makes kits specifically for these trims rather than reusing standard Silverado and Sierra parts.

Can you level a Trail Boss or AT4? Yes.

This surprises people - the truck has a "lift" and still benefits from a level. Because the rake carries over, a 1 to 2 inch front leveling kit built for the Trail Boss and AT4 platform squares the stance, kills the nose-down look, and opens front tire clearance. ReadyLIFT and Rough Country both make trim-specific kits, and installed pricing starts at $550 with the $150 alignment included in the quote. For the broader half-ton picture - kit styles, heights, and tire math - our Silverado leveling kit guide covers the full lineup.

One honest caution: the factory off-road shocks have a fixed amount of travel. A modest, trim-specific level keeps the geometry happy. Stacking a tall spacer on the stock dampers is how you end up with a harsh ride and topped-out shocks, which is exactly the "trail boss leveling kit problems" story you see in forums. Right kit, right height, no problems.

Can you add more lift? Also yes.

If the goal is real height, the aftermarket builds full systems engineered to work with the factory setup. A 3 to 3.5 inch Trail Boss/AT4-specific kit from Rough Country or BDS puts total stance in the 5-inch-plus range against a standard truck, clears 35s, and replaces or extends the components that matter instead of just spacing them. Our install tiers: 2.5 to 3.5 inch lifts from $1,100, and 3.5 to 6 inch lifts from $2,200. Not sure how tall you actually want to go? We wrote what lift height should you choose for exactly that decision - daily driving, garage clearance, and towing all pull the answer down more than Instagram pulls it up.

What tires fit

Setup Stance vs standard truck Typical max tire
Stock Trail Boss / AT4 +2 inches 33s - the factory tire is already about 32 inches
Trim-specific front level +2 inches, squared stance 33s to 34s, minor trimming truck-by-truck
3 to 3.5 inch trim-specific kit +5 inches or more 35s

Those are honest typicals, not guarantees - wheel offset and tire width move the line, which is why we check every combination against the actual truck before anything gets ordered. The factory Trail Boss and AT4 wheels are decent pieces, and plenty of leveled trucks keep them with a 33 or 34. Once 35s enter the plan, a wheel with the right width and offset usually enters with them - both to clear suspension at full lock and to keep the tire from looking pinched under the flares.

Not sure whether to stop at the level or go for the full kit? Simple test: if the goal is stance and a squared-up look, level it and spend the savings on tires. If the goal is 35s and trail clearance, plan the 3.5 inch system from the start rather than paying for a level now and a lift later.

Ride quality and towing notes

Keep the shocks in the conversation. On leveled trucks staying near stock height, the factory dampers do fine. On taller builds, stepping into Bilstein or Fox units tuned for the added height is the difference between a truck that rides better than stock and one that crashes over the I-45 expansion joints. And if you tow heavy - boat to Lake Conroe, gooseneck, equipment - tell us. We will keep enough rake in the setup that the truck still sits right loaded.
